trouble with VAIO VGN N31 M/W screen

Hello
I have my new Vaio VGN N31 M/W for 3 days now and have some problems with my monitor/screen:
4 times already, the screen "freezes" i mean suddenly the screen turns black with all colored stripes (vertical) and it blocks, can't do anything then even not move the cursor, the only thing i can do is to manualy turn off the laptop, and restart in normal mode and then the laptop is fine again

Even I'm facing the same problem on my FZ11Z. I bought my laptop in Aug 2007, by spending a huge amount of £1300/-. i never use more than a hour everyday.
Problem is:
Sometimes the screen goes blank as if some light is switched off and i could see the screen content without the backlight.
If i close the Lid and then Open i will get the backlight.

Is it problem with VAIO laptops? is it due to failure of quality control?

Please let me know whether its best to sell my laptop and go for a better one.
