Xperia x10 "Unable to scan for networks"

Hi, I have an xperia x10 on at&t (still only with android 1.6) and it has been working fine until a couple of days ago.  My wi-fi has been working fine (except for the occasional "unable to start wifi") until one day it just stopped working.  I was connected to my home wifi network when all of a sudden it just disconnected.  I proceeded to go into my settings to turn it back on, however, when I checked the box, it turned on for about 5 seconds then turned off and said "unable to scan for networks."  I have tried everything I can to get it back to working.  I have tried:

-Taking out the battery, sim, and memory card for a few minutes.  replacing them all and restarting the phone.

-doing the above but while everything is out holding the back key for 30 seconds, then putting everything back in and holding the power button for 10 seconds.

-Plugging the phone into my computer

The only thing I haven't done is the factory reset.  I do NOT want to do this because I have heard that it only sometimes works and if it doesn't work, then I cant't get any of my apps or anything back on my phone and it will be completely useless to me.  I do not want to lose all the data on my phone because I have no internet currently, and therefore can not backup anything.

Please provide me with some info that can fix this!

Latest official update 2.1 (UXP update)

It's for X10a but works just fine with X10i

go here and download the X10a-2_1_A-_0_435_EW.ftf file

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=935407

go to Flashtool and download 0.2.4

inside there will be 5 folders

                                   Custom
                                   Drivers
                                   Firmwares
                                   Loaders
                                   X10Flasher_lib
put the file you just downloaded into "Firmwares" folder
click on X10FlashTool (Application)
click on Connect (it's a button)
Select X10
Press Ok
it will ask you to connect your phone on Flashmode (turn off your phone, press the back button, then connect the USB) press OK
Click Flash

Do you really care about AT&T apps on your phone or do you want to have Android 2.1?

if you do, you can always debrand your phone, now by doing this the warranty won't cover it as long as you have an unbranded firmware on your phone, but if you flash it back to AT&T when you need it to be repaired then you should be fine, then again is up to you

here is the link it's quite simple

Remember I don't have internet?

I have looked into debranding and rooting, I would love to get rid of AT&T.  But I do not want to take the risk of making a mistake and ruining my phone.  The instructions are kind of confusing.

well there's an easier way to do it, through davinci team

http://davinciteam.us/index.html

they will charge around $15

It's not that complicated to do it through the XDA

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201

just follow "gfgodoy" steps

Here's what happens:

You download the two files listed by Binary
Put the extracted firmware in the firmware directory (along with loader.sin)(10 sin files together)
Open the .bat file (type in 1, 2 , 3 or 4 depending on your windows version).
It will ask you: Please plug Xperia in flash mode so,

Turn off your phone, press back and plug the usb cable! and Hit enter ( you should be quick, if you take to long it may not work, you have about 5 seconds. You know you are in flash mode because de GREEN LED on your X10 will stay ON)

Your device will stay with the screen off while flashing. The .bat will be running and running like mad for about 2-3 minutes. After that WAIT for windows to tell you that it has finished. Hit ENTER. The .bat WILL CLOSE.

On your device: Unplug your USB cable, wait for it to boot. I waited for like 2 minutes and nothing so I had to press POWER again.

A device and a camera with a BLUE arrow will appear on your device screen. WAIT, WAIT, WAIT. It will reboot, and take like 2 minutes on sony ericson screen.

It will boot up eventualy.

then follow this link http://www.sonyericsson.com/update/BackupAndRestore/xperiaX10?lc=en&cc=NO and use PC Companion to install the latest Back Up & Restore but you should go for 2.1
