Sony WH-1000XM4 Noice cancellation question

Hi All

Does anyone happen to know if I can use the noice cancellation feature on the WH-1000XM4 headphones without

1) Having them connected via bluetooth/plugged in?

2) Playing music?

I've seen others mention using the NC feature without playing music, but it's a powered circuit, so it can only work over Bluetooth as far as I know.

I can't test it personally though, so hopefully someone who can will share more info with us.
