When you plug the i.Link cable into the camera and then into the VAIO, does the operating system making a sound to announce the arrival of new hardware?
Be sure your camera is in VCR (VTR) mode and is powered from an AC outlet.
Once the OS realises there is a camera connected you can then use DVGate or MovieShaker to work with the camera.

Thanks Eddie,
my problem seems to be of a different kind. The OS does not make an sound when I plug in the cable. It simply doesn't recognize the new hardware
