need to get data off my hard drive

My VGN-S3XP has developed a fault and will not load XP..error flashes on the screen (so quick I cannot read it clearly) but says something about registry error.
My latest book is on the harddrive (not backed up!) does anyone know how i can get the data off the hard drive?

Try to start your vaio in save mode. Click the power button an click a few times F8. then start in save mode. If it works then try to backup your book from there. After that start with the last windows restore point.

Have you tried making a boot disk with NTFS for DOS from bootdisk.com?

No i havnt..just had a look at the site and completly lost?
What do i need to download and how do i use it?

You could aslo try to boot via network. Or connect the harddisk directly to another PC. You should be able to read and save the files then. Maybe the PC store in your near is able to do that.

Took out the disc, but it is sata and my other pc's are ide

A converter is the best bet
