Black Screen on startup? please help

I have a sony vaio svf1521p2eb that i bought new 10 months ago. when i restarted it yesterday due to an update for itunes it would not turn back on. the LED's come on and the fan is on but the screen stays off. I have tried connecting to an external monitor via hdmi and still nothing. Can anyone help with this please?

Happens to me time to time, too. Somehow it seems to related with updates but not always.

The trick helping me is to keep the power button pressed until (like 10 secs) machine shuts down.Then powering it up again.This works most of the time. Sometimes it can take something like 10 minutes to come back life again.
