Sony KDL-32EX403 USB Playback Video Format Comparison

Hi all,

Well I finally got fed up of trying to figure out what file format worked best on my KDL-32EX403 and did some 'scientific' tests.

Noted below are the results for converting firstly a tv program and then a film, both downloaded as AVI files, both not working on the Sony tv as downloaded.

I used the WinAvi convertor, it's a nice little program but you do have to pay for it. Can anyone recommend a free and quicker convertor for AVI files?

WinAvi Video Convertor tests on a Sony Bravia KDL-32EX403Test File: Archer series 2 Blood test – Avi download, doesn't work with the original download

Output FileOutput FormatEncoderAudioSpeed to convertComments
BAvi 1080pXvidMP32hrs 20good quality but pointless to go 1080 when compared with 702 version, slow conversion
CAvi 720HDXvidMP31hrsame quality as 1080p conversion, quicker conversion
DMpeg1res as provided
20 minspoor quality, weird frame size, VERY quick conversion
EMpeg11280x720
20 minsgood quality, slow panning, VERY quick conversion

Test File: Tron.avi as downloaded

After 1% converted
FAvi 720HDXvidMP33hrs 30Good quality picture, similar to Mpeg, but noticably smoother playback
GMpeg11280x720
1hr20Not as smooth as Avi but quick conversion times.

In Summary then...

Converting the original AVI files to MPEG is SOOOO much quicker (up to three times quicker) but there is a subtle judder to the picture when the camera pans across. AVI judder is not noticeable and the quality is subtly sharper.

Hmm, any thoughts on a quicker convertor, I don't think I can wait three hours no matter how fussy I am about video quality!!

Hi Andy,

Not being a movie ripper, I only convert occasional clips, and therefore stick to free programs.

I can't remember if I've done avi with all of them, but they tend to take anything you throw at them, and are highly customisable.

Freemake  http://http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

QuickMediaConverter http://quick-media-converter.en.softonic.com

Super  http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html  NB Do NOT download  'AVS Video Converter' from prominent advert banners. The free 'Super' download link is a line of tiny text near page bottom saying "Download SUPER © setup file  from our 2nd dedicated server".

PS  Thanks for the table - I have the same model, so it should be very useful.

Have fun experimenting, as they're all free - and spyware free.
