Connecting HT-AS5 to Bravia TV

I have connected my new Home theatre system HT-AS5 to Bravia KDL-40W4500 with HDMI cables as the operating instructions but it also shows a optical digital cord as well do I need both?. The reason for the question is that when using the theatre system remote to change to TV all it does is swich the sound off. I have to use shift and TV which switches workes but without sound. I have switched sync on on both TV and theatre still without success. Any help would be appreciated.

go into your tv menu and change audio from tv to audio system hdmi supports audio so no you won't need an optical lead
