BDP S380; video output question

Bought the s380 today, love the pictue quality, love the iphone app.. WHat is causing a problem is the video output - if I set it to HDMI 1080p, the Home meno won't show, e.g.  I get a blank screen and my TV shows the "no signal" error. If I set it to standard def, the home menu shows, but BluRays play at SD rather than 1080p, which seems a little pointless

Is this solvable? I have the latest firmware, my TV is definitley able to display 1080p; I'm hoping I'm missing something dumb..

Just to say its been resolved by plugging in a usb memory stick in the back, I can only guess why..
