Bravia 8 - K65XR80 - restarting - regularly

I purchased a 65in Bravia 8 TV (K-65XR80) in August 24.  I’ve been very happy with overall quality, functionality and responsiveness.

However, During that time (5 months) I’ve had approximately 5 Power Off/On (I.e. Restarts) while watching the TV. Two while streaming, Two while watching Blu-Ray player and once while simply on TV Home screen doing nothing!

I started to investigate (using System Uptime) to see if they were any restarts while not watching the TV – and there are.

Specifically, if the TV has an Uptime of over 26 hours (approx.) and then switched off by the remote (i.e. goes into standby), then 6 minutes later (actually 5m 55s) it performs a power restart and the Uptime goes to zero. If the Uptime is less than 26 hours it won’t power restart after going into standby.

The power restart is obvious – there are 2 “clicks” – one as the power goes off and another “click” when the power comes back on. Followed (20-30 secs)  by the power light briefly coming on at the front of the TV as the OS is loaded.

The above is predictable and reproducible! So potentially two problems – or the same problem manifesting in two ways?

At the moment, I’m concentrating on why it appears to “schedule” a power restart (power off/on) every time I power off (go into standby), when the uptime is greater than 26 hours!

I have tried a few things to see if it makes any difference:-

  • Removed all HDMI Connected equipment – only coax and Wi-Fi connected. Left for more than 26 hours.
  • Remove ALL connections (inc coax) disconnect from power socket for 2mins+
  • Use “Other” remote (IR remote rather than RF remote)
  • Cleared internal cached storage – several times.
  • This happens with both Version 112.627.030.1EUA and the latest from December -  Version 112.628.050.1EUA.
  • Ran all Diagnostics from Help screen – all OK.
  • The Power outlet is fine – same one I used for previous Bravia TV for 10 years with no issues.

None of the above makes any difference.

My last option will be a factory reset. I don’t want to do this yet due to the number of “apps” I need to configure, etc.

So, my question – does anyone have a Bravia 8 TV (I’m guessing size is not relevant, but who knows) that could look to see if they get restarts (power Off/On)  after using  “Power Off” from remote (i.e. standby) AND after an Uptime of 26hours?

Given the reproducible nature, I’m not sure if this is a “bug” or a “feature”. I don’t think it’s a fault as such. It does look like some obscure “logic” in the software (or firmware).

@Likanmin

I'd say proceed with the factory reset to exclude the fact that this could be a bug or software related matter!

I don't have a Bravia 8 TV to answer your question tho! Sorry 😅

Hi,

Thanks for the comment, I'm currently making note any of the configuration changes I might have made and hope to factory reset next week.

I will feed back information as I get it!

UPDATE:
Factory Reset carried out this week. All data and configuration erased.

Interestingly it did not revert the Software Version in any way – it was still the recent December 2024 version. (i.e. 112.628.050.1EUA). This was the first thing I looked at after the initial setup.

I only set up and tuned the TV channels, connected Wi-Fi and made no other adjustments.

I did not connect anything to the HDMI ports (or any other port, other than aerial). Or load any extra Apps.

I waited 26hours, 15mins – confirmed by Uptime setting (i.e. over 26 hours).

Powered on TV and waited for a few minutes.

I then powered off TV by remote (i.e. into standby).

Exactly 5mins 55secs later the TV carried out a “Restart” – Power off/ Power on as described in original post. The Uptime was now a few minutes. This is still reproducible.

So I’m convinced it’s a “feature” of the software. The question is “Why?”.

Without confirmation, or otherwise, of another Bravia 8, I still don’t know if it’s my TV or a general feature.

I’m still hoping some reader may have a Bravia 8 and see if they can reproduce this (or not).

I will also go back to my supplier for some comment.

Hi @Likanmin, I believe that this feature is to reduce power consumption. You can switch it off from the settings by following the steps here: https://www.sony-asia.com/microsite/support/interactive/GTV22/index.html#tv_emu_a_p_power-energy

Thanks for your recent input and help.

For info: that link does not accurately correspond to the settings on my Bravia 8

The Link shows two options under “Power and Energy” – namely “Power on behaviour” and “Energy saver”

However, my Bravia 8 has five options under “Power and Energy” – namely “Power on behaviour”, “Auto Turn-off”, “Auto power saving mode (when Camera connected)”, “Power Saving” and “Eco Dashboard”
BUT – in all the above setting it is about turning off the TV ("Power Off") and placing it in standby when inactive for a period. It is not about “Restarting” the TV.

To be clear – “Power Off” on the remote and via the above settings turn off the TV screen and place the TV into standby. This means it can still update TV guide etc, The TV is not disconnected from the mains supply. It does not reset the Uptime.

The term “Restart” (as I understand it) – means a hard disconnect from the mains supply. Then after a short while the mains is re-connected and the Google OS is loaded and initiated and then goes into standby waiting for use. In this case it does reset the Uptime.

The problem I have is not the TV being placed in to standby via any setting, but an actual hard power cycle 5 mins and 55 secs after I place it into standby (i.e. “Power Off”) – and it has an uptime of over 26hours

My question is still “Why?” and will the hard power off/on every 26 hours or so, cause the TV long term problems? And as stated, the Factory reset did not affect this.
