I chased Sony up this morning, they have received my TV, and handed the replacement process back over to my local service centre.
I’ve just called them, the unit is on order but won’t be with them until after the weekend!!

No coincidence. Many hardware parts in the TV require some sort of software/firmware which gets loaded by the main firmware. So a main firmware update can brick certain hardware parts beyond user recoverability for sure.

Yes, I know, I was just trying to be sarcastic.
That is what I was trying to explain to the technician at the service center when he referred to the hardware escalation.
I strongly doubt that there is a major hardware fault, just the hardware does not have the appropriate firmware.

Here in Italy they send the local Sony-affiliated technician at customer's home first

A convenient and client centric approach, but in this case I think it's a waste of time.
