Thoughts on the XZ1

I would still like to get the XZ Premium but the XZ1 looks like it will have a better camera interface and has the 3D scanning.

What do you think?

I prefer the XZ1 purely because it has an all-metal frame, finally. However 4GB of RAM is stingey yet again from Sony! They crippled the XZ with 3GB and they are crippling the XZ1 with only 4GB. Sure it is enough right now but it won't be when Android O lands! The new Samsung Note will have 6GB of RAM and I feel that's the right direction for late 2017 releases.

the note is a bigger phone and a much more expensive phone...    hardly fair?    the s8 gets 4gb of ram in the 64gb model  (6 in the 128gb model)  and again that phone costs more.  so are you being fair with your "stingy" remark?

The battery sounds stingy though & i bet that was a design decision related to keeping its weight down as much as anything..  but i don't know

the pictures look fine on this review & they are generally up on the phone.

glad i already have mine on order. i like the style of the sony since the Z1 & as i target good audio & good camera features over all others the sony feature set suits me well.  i would have prefered a glass back and a gold look (like my Z5) but i have gone for silver and hope it doesnt scratch...  i don't like to have a phone then shove it in a case - what's the point in it being thin or of a nice colour then!

Here is more camera comparision between Note 8, XZ1, XZP.

Note 8 vs XZ1 vs XZP

Seem the detail on Note 8 is much better both on good light and low light. Guess this is due to the F1.7 aperture and bigger pixel pitch. It has less noise as well.

However the colour on XZ1 is much more natural.

Top processor, premium build. RAM is cheap as OnePlus prove with their 8GB. I am assuming that the XZ/XZ Premium/XZ1 are flagship phones but you're telling me they are budget or mid-priced phones? 3GB in the XZ was (just) enough for Marshmallow and 4GB in the Premium/XZ1 is just enough for Nougat. Let's face it though, when the XZ came out towards the end of 2016 the rest of the premium market had moved to 4GB and now towards the end of 2017 the rest of the premium market is starting to spec 6-8GB.

The cheap chinese brands are never going to be on price point with Japanese or Korean.   So you first compared the "stingy" Sony with a far more expensive Samsung Note...   when the more comparable yet still more expensive Galaxy S8 is also 4gb ram for it's 64GB model & when you agree that was not fair you decide to compare it to a cheaper brand (with it's own short comings ignored)

As for that cheap Chinese brand... why with all that power have they been reported to use a VW-esque benchmark detector to alter performance?  Something that is true about the "real world" to playing "Top Trumps" with specs is how the components are actually made to work with each other & to be usable by a human interacting with it (things are often slowed down so we can use them)... a lot of efficiency can be made or lost that way, and lugging around things that are not optiminsed can make the lesser spec'd one outperform the one that should be better.

I wish I could say I trust Sony to do that better but I don't think anyone can say the Camera app does their components the best job when you think Apple and others use it's sister and seem to get better reviews in some circumstances.  Which again is a factor...  Phones are still tuned for their expected target audience not a benchmark that is the same for all users.

I have pre-ordered a XZ1 to replace my Z5 (replaced Z1 - S - X10)  because it offers the mix of things I want from a phone (Audio & camera 1st) in the premium brand, design / price compromise.

The XZ1 is a good phone and addresses some of the failings of the XZ, ie 4GB of RAM and a metal chassis. I'm just arguing that to be a great phone it needs more RAM (*and a better camera). Once Android O drops you're going to see reloads and poor multitasking just like we did when Nougat came to the XZ (which lets face it was never all that great at multitasking due to the paltry 3GB of RAM). Is 4GB sufficient for a 2017 smartphone? Absolutely, but does it have 12 months of longevity built in? I would argue not, just like with the original XZ. My next phone will have 6GB of RAM because I've been caught out by SONY's end of year speccing before.

Z3C is still doing great with 2Gb of ram.

I examined some videos about Xz1 and OS uses more or less the same memory as Nougat. I don't remember the link though.

If they keep optimizing the system, 4gb will be enough for a while. If, instead, they will go through the obsolescence path not even 8Gb will save us.

The real question is if Sony, someday, will say: " we delivered a distortion free and double tap to wake firmware, but you have to buy a new phone to have it!"

SD835 is supposedly quite power efficient. combined with Android Oreo and its power saving features it could still get good battery life.

that said, XZ1 Compact has got the same battery size and with a smaller battery and less pixels to push around it'll probably have more stamina that the regular XZ.

Still, it would last longer using same components if they include bigger battery. But they didn't.

and that would put the weight up.

the phone is a compromise of parts, size and weight.

and price-wise it is cheaper than the iphone 8, iphone 8+, iphone x and samsung galaxy s8, s8+ and note...  so when comparing (and remember the 64gb samsung s8 is also 4GB ram) don't forget you are looking at a phone that has a different mix of top end features but has to hit a price and weight point..

you need to think about what "adding those things you think are lacking" does to the overall design otherwise you have when homer simpson made his own car in his brothers car plant.
