Storage and memory problems with Sony Xperia L

I am struggling to maintain memory and storage space on my Sony Xperia L.  I have read other posts on other forums about this seemingly wide spread problem with the Sony Xperia L.  I have an SD card and have cleared out some internal storage but still my device storage is tight for space.  I don't even have that many apps and certainly can't install any new ones as i don't have enough room and can't even get updates for some as there is not enough space.  Can you advise me on how best to deal with this problem and sort it.  I know other people who do not experience this problem with their Android phones and find it a big negative that it seems to be an ongoing problem with the Sony Xperia L.

you can not move the apps to your SD card, you will have to uninstall apps or clear the cache on your current apps to free up some space

I installed the AVG Cleaner app and have been clearing my caches regularly and that has been helping a bit
