Echo and noise during voip calls, skype, viber, hangouts on z2 tablet

There is a very bad echo for the other person on the call when using any voice calling app. The problem is the same for google hangouts, skype, and viber.

The microphone works fine as recorded messages have no problem. the tablet is unusable for calling as the other person on the call cannot speak.

I have the same issue, even after the latest update (17.1.1.A.0.402)!

Come on Sony! video chatting on my tablet is one of my main uses!

Is it a hardware issue or can it be fixed with a software update?

The strange thing is that the recorded audio is fine (albeit a bit too quiet) when it is recorded using sony's own camera app or the mic test in the diagnostics app, but any third-party app only manages to get extremely distorted audio from the mic, with frequent short drop-outs. This makes me suspect a microphone driver issue.
