Data connection error Xperia XA

Last night I factory reset my xperia xa just to have a fresh start and clear storage and then my problem occurred. 

1) Got a notification that I need to login to my network. 

2) Tried downloading Internet and mms settings but this failed even though the device was showing H+ or 4g.

3) I reset all network settings and then retried downloading Internet and mms settings. This worked and I was able to use 3g for a while before the problem occurred again.

4) I retried step 3 and this worked again but then the problem occurred a third time this method did not work until about the 8th attempt of resetting and redownloading. On this last attempt that was successful I had arrived in a location with good data signal, the previous attempts had been showing H+ or 4g but were in the mountains in Wales where the data connection is typically slow regardless of what connection is shown.

Other notes: During this process I have turned my phone off and on at each occurrence of the problem. Also my text and call service has been unaffected and has been working as usual throughout this. I have about 3GB of data to use. The device is properly updated. 

I would like to know if there is a way to prevent this from happening again, perhaps a setting I need to change. I saw some other threads on a similar issue but nothing that seemed to be of use. I am commuting a lot and am relying heavily on my data connection. This would seem to be a device issue rather than a network issue and my network provider instructed me to contact the device manufacturer anyway.

Update: It happened again shortly after posting the above and wouldn't fix after trying to reset network settings, downloading settings wouldn't work (this shows that signal strength has nothing to do with the problem). However I just boarded a bus with WiFi and used the WiFi to download Internet settings which worked, I turned off WiFi afterwards and am using data again to post this message.

Is it possible for you to test a different SIM card?

I had to top up again today anyway and it seems to be working fine now. Not sure what that was about. Requesting thread close. Thank you x
