Startup repair

My vaio laptop which uses vista has been unused for 5 months as I have been travelling. On starting it up everything worked perfectly. I use AVG as my virus protection and it needed updating. This seemed to work and I was asked to restart the computer to make the updates current.
It will not restart. The message says that a recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
It offered to launch startup repair but everytime I do this, when I tell it to again I keep getting back to the same error recovery message.
I need help as I am in a loop and the machine will not start.
Any suggestions?

What is the exact error message?

What model do you have?

Do you have important data on the Vaio and need to recover it or can you allow a reformat?

Did you make recovery discs?

Are you using the original Operating System?
