I cannot open the documentation user manual has anyone any ideas why

Have you got the latest adobe acrobat reader installed. Version 8 is Vista compatible and available from the adobe site.

Presumably the file is on your hard drive. Search for guide and it should appear under the files section and can then be read directly.
