help with wireless router

Help i have just had my netgear router delivered from virgin media and after following the instructions to the letter my computer will not recognise/find the network connection. How do i turn on the wireless on my computer and if any one can help with wireless generally i would really appreciate it

I now feel a bit of an idiot, cause when you asked what model I had, I looked to the back of my desktop and on the side is the switch to turn on the LAN wireless network. DOH
