DVD Recorder HXD995 started not recognizing own DVD recordings

My DVD Recorder HXD995 started playing up last week after 3 years of heavy use- I have burned about 500 discs to date.

The trouble began when I tried to review a freshly dubbed and finalised DVDR disc before removing it from the player for labelling. Attempts at playback resulted in the message 'unrecognized or unreadable disc'. It played OK in my PC with VLC player and the finalised menu was also OK.

A few days later I found I could continue to record to HDD, but dubbing is now impossible. inserting a blank DVDR (+R) results in 'cannot format', and the disc is ejected.

Also won't play any of the 500 dubbed discs that I've made (+R and -R) with the same message 'unreadable disc' or 'cannot format'.

Strangely, commercial DVDs will load and play just fine.Does this rule out a laser problem?

I am thinking a software glitch has occured, or a setting has changed.

Any ideas much appreciated. Tried lens cleaning with a disc and isopropanol, no improvement.
