Hi can anyone tell me if it is possible to conect a laptop via a usb lead to this machine and use it as a wifi conection for the internet so i dont have to pay the rip off price of £79.00 for the wifi dongle just to download updates.

no you cannot, only way is with the Sony UWA-BR100 or a lan cable.
