Missing frames on USB HDD playback

When playing back recordings made on a USB HDD we get missing frames where the screen goes black for a split second. This can be every few minutes or every few seconds. This only happens on playback, not when watching live TV.

I've only tried 1 HDD which has been used on the TV since i bought it. Like Mrhappy37 said, it was fine on Android 7, the issue was introduced in Android 8 has is still present, even on the Android 9 update. It only seems to inflict HD recorded programs.

What HDD's are people using? If the price is OK i may purchase a known working model of HDD and try it. I'm not paying massive money because i'm certain it's a software problem but I am open to trying things.

Sony support are now wanting to 'physically inspect' my TV now.

Hi @rogerpbill Can you confirm that your TV is no longer exhibiting the black flashes / frame drops since the update to v6.4960 on your XH8196?

If so i can feed this back to Sony support as further evidence that it is a software issue.

Hi HandyAndyxf9005

No black flashes or frame drops since we upgraded to PKG6.4960.0628EUA on our KD-49XH9505 and our KD-43XH8505  but we don't have an XH8196

XH8196 here. I can confirm I’ve watched/recorded plenty since the recent update. No more black flashes.. it’s a seagate 1TB usb powered “expansion” drive.

@Handyandyxf9005

While the issue was introduced with an update, most users report the last one fixed it. So I'm not surprised Sony are thinking of inspecting your TV as whatever is happening with your set may not be the same as others.

It's not easy to explain it, or else we would've had an idea how to fix it, but you seem to have done everything you can. So I'd take Sony on their offer to look at your TV. (I know you're ready to just buy another HDD, but I'm not so sure it would work).

I think the users which the update worked for were XH model users but XF users are still stuck with the problem.

Sounds like that could be the case @Mrhappy37  My TV is an XG and only a year old but is still on an older version of Android and still missing frames.

Myself and @Mrhappy37 are both XF9005 owners and on the latest Android 9 update it is still not working.

Can any XH / Xg owners on here confirm if it's working for you or not? I would like to know TV model number, software number and Android version.

Thanks

@mad_cyril

Have you checked the Sony site to see if an update is available for your TV? I know OTA updates are a little slower to come through.

@Handyandyxf9005 My KD-43XG8096 is on Android 8 v6.6575 and should be eligible to upgrade to v6.7140 but it has not updated yet. However, I don't know how the Sony versions relate to Android 8 and 9. As soon as I can get it to update I will check the recordings again and post.
