topic Mode Switches in PCs & Accessories

Can anyone help me here? I am trying to clear up my desktop by assigning icons/applications to the shortcut buttons (between mode and setting, above the function keys). Once applied, and cleaned off the desktop, they then dissappear of the mode short cut keys. Sort of defeats the purpose of having to keep them on the desktop too. All help welcome
