Sony Vaio VGN-C1S need Audio + PCI driver? ? ?

hi all, I recently installed Windows XP Pro S2 onto a VGN-C1S laptop however I cannot get the Audio driver to install as it keeps giving me a message saying "Warning - Microsoft Bus driver should be loaded in your system before installing Realtek HD Audio driver !"

I have searched high and low for a solution but to no avail, I have downloaded all of the drivers available via the Sony website and installed them all but it wont allow me to install the sound please help.

Also on the Device Manager listed in "Other devices" it says ! PCI Device ! with a question mark next to it, I have installed everything which appears to be related to this but seem to be getting nowhere plus every time I turn it on I get the "found new hardware" wizard box keep popping up.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi misphit2011,

XP requires the installation of the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver (KB835221) prior to installing the audio drivers.

Try a Google for KB835221.

Mike,

I don’t know what that is all about! Try downloading the original drivers package for the VGN-FS. Extract the Audio Folder and you will find KB835221.exe under UAA High Definition Audio Class driver.

Once installed and rebooted the PCI Device with warning symbol should be recognised as the audio device. You can then install your Realtek HD audio drivers.

Hi Rich thanks for your reply. I have downloaded the KB835221 file and now I'm completely stuck!

In the readme document it says the following:

These instructions assume that you preinstall the relevant Windows OS over
a network, by using Windows PE.

1. Copy KB835221.exe or KB835221_srv03.exe to a subdirectory on your
technician computer.

   For example, create a folder under the OPKTools directory called
   Updates. Place the file KB835221.exe or KB835221_srv03.exe in the
   Updates folder.

2. In Setup Manager create or modify an existing Windows
   configuration set.

3. Add the following command-line information to the Preinstalled
Applications page in Setup Manager:

Executable: \\server\OpkTools\Updates\KB835221.exe (or KB835221_srv03.exe)

Parameters: -q -n -z

4. Save the configuration set.

5. Start the destination computer by using Windows PE and preinstall
the relevant Windows OS by using the command factory -winpe.

   The UAA HD Audio OOB package is installed immediately after the Windows OS is
   installed, and it will be enabled on the next reboot of the computer.

Note: The syntax of the Out Of Band (OOB) installation
program is:

KB835221.exe [/help] [/quiet] [/passive] [/uninstall] [/norestart] [/integrate] [/forcerestart]

I really don't understand what to do, what does it mean by 'subdirectory' or 'technician computer'?? It looks like a real effort just to get something real simple to work. I appreciate your help.

Hi Rich, thanks for your reply. I downloaded the and installed the file from the FS model drivers and now it tries to install but as it gets to the end of installation it comes up with an error message saying "Realtek HD Audio driver failure"

This is really frustrating now, It now recognises the PCI device as 'Audio Device on High Defintion Audio Bus' but wont let me install the driver. I have tried via both the device manager and manually installing it clicking on the setup.exe file but the same thing keeps happening.

Hi Mike,

It would seem that XP does not accept the Realtek Vista drivers. You will need to source XP drivers for the ALC889 chipset ether from a Vaio model that came with XP installed or was supported for downgrade to XP or search the Realtek site.

If you have problems finding the drivers I will try a search this evening.

Thanks Rich thing is it wasn't the Vista driver I was trying to install it was for XP and found here:

I have just noticed on the downloads page it says at the bottom:

How to install High Definition audio driver after Windows XP setup

1. You must first install the Microsoft's KB835221 hotfix
2. Install the audio driver for your sound device

So it looks like they are well aware of this, shall I try reinstalling Windows and starting again by installing the hotfix first before installing anything else? I have tried looking on the links you sent but I am a little confused as to which one I will specifically need. Failing any of those I will just have to try another fresh XP install.

Hi Andy,

Prior to going down the route of a fresh install ox XP there are a couple of things you could try.

1 A Windows system restore to a date prior to the date that you first tried installing the audio driver.

2 Remove any device in Device Manager that refers to an Audio Device.

With either option reboot and then install the hotfix followed by the audio drivers.

If both of these fail to resolve the issue then, as painful as it is, a re-install seems the next logical option.

If you want to try the driver direct from Realtek it is the ‘Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003(32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file) Version R2.65.

I have noticed that the README file in your audio driver folder makes reference to KB888111 which is the updated version. Can be downloaded from here: http://download.cnet.com/kb888111-exe/3000-2110_4-104699.html
