I have a Sony vgn-fw21m notebook, it came installed with vista and all of the sony software.

I have since reformatted my machine and installed windows 7 ultimate. This is the second time I have done this, but this time I am experiencing some driver problems.

My touchpad is broken, it has been broken for a long time. The right click button does not work on my machine, its not a software problem, its a physical problem that I have never addressed.

Previous to my current reinstallation of windows I had got round my dodgey right click problem by changing what the buttons on my touchpad do. For example:

Tap on the pad = left click

Left click = right click

Right click = broken button

I just tried finding the settings where I can make these changes to my touchpad but its no longer there. All I have is standard mouse settings, which wont help me.

I gather I am missing some kind of driver or sony software for the touchpad. I have been on the sony website for my laptop downloaded the original "touchpad drivers and have pasted them into my system32 drivers folder, then rebooted.

I know I probably did this wrong as nothing has changed.

I am really desperate for help in resolving this issue now. If i cant resolve it i will only be able to use my laptop properly using an external mouse, which is just not practical.

Hi rydertwoeight89,

Pasting the drivers into the System32 folder, as you have discovered, will have no effect.

You need to update the driver for the touchpad, or in your case possibly a PS/2 mouse, from within Device Manager using the Have Disk method.

Extract the files from the installation package to a known location.

Click Start > Control Panel.

Double click Device Manager.

Right click the device and select Properties

Click the Driver tab.

Click Update Driver.

Click Browse my computer for driver software.

Click Let me pick from a list...

Click Have Disk....

Click Browse and navigate to the folder where you placed the extracted files.

Click OK.

Click Next.

Click Finish.

Reboot your system if requested.
