Z5 front screen cracked by itself?? Unresponsive and need flight...

My new z5 front screen cracked without any accident (no dropping etc..). the back panel of my z2 cracked too.. (I was hoping Sony would be better quality than iphone..) As the front glass is cracked from top to bottom the phone is unresponsive. I'm abroad and flying home tomorrow, how can I turn it off (or flightmode) during flight?? tried the on/off button but I cant off the phone, due to the choice of restart ór off on the screen (that is unreponsive..). My phone was charged fully so battery will last when my flight departs... Is the front screen possible to repair or should I go for another brand?

I'm sorry to hear that and I understand your frustration but a screen can't crack on its own, there has to be some external force/stress to crack it. Contact your Local support regarding this

if you can post a picture of the cracked screen.

Welcome to the community.

You can force your phone to shut down by holding the power button and the volume up button at the same time.

maybe true.. but the only stress was to carry it in my pocket, where all previous smartphones as the i3 i4 i5 z2 survived. nothing else inside. so the stress from that? any idea how to turn it off for the flight?? Bec it is still on and on network..

@Hefigu,

You will be unable to put the phone into flight mode if your touch is not functional. You will have to turn the phone off with the method I suggested above.

ok thanks, so thats the trick to force it off

im sad its broken, all my other sony stuff is not this weak (a7, srs x33, etc) and my z2 front screen survived 2 years. Also so handicaped on work travel in europe wo phone for a few more days.

Hard to tell, perhaps keys, a coin, or something hit the screen, on that picture it seems that the point on impact its on the right side

The glass used in the Z5 is the same type of glass used in basically any other phone/tablet on the market. It is very unfortunate that this has happened but there could be any number of reasons as to why. Because it was in your pocket it is difficult to say exactly what happened. It could have bent, or been pressed against as you leant on something, or been knocked by something.

Your local support team as uliwooly suggested should be able to repair the device for you though.

I have to support @Hefigu on the screen cracing by itself. This could be induced by stress on the screen during the build. Well mine cracked overnight while sitting on the night stand

Well it can crack by "itself" but like daniedup said screens will load stress and kind of pressure on it even from the little contacts. Mine Z2 backpanel cracked when i went from outside (-20 celsius) to inside a warm train and placed the phone so that the sun had straight contact to it. But its rare it cracks imo.

Glad I have seen your post. Had a nightmare with z3 screens. Think I will try something different till sony pulls it finger out. Shame the best phone I have had bar the screen. A phone needs to be able to handle everyday life.

Hello everyone sorry to start with a negative and old story but I'm yet another cracked screen victim.

Looked around the house and we have 14 Sony items all have been reliable and at work well zillions, this range of phones hasn't been Sony's finest in terms of build integrity.

I cracked the rear screen (I think) but the front screen crack just appeared a few weeks before.

Shame really to add insult the repair bill seems high for correcting design issues.

Still I vent a little frustration on here knowing that it will be ignored by Sony hey ho...........

I've been using Sony phones for six years because of their durability.

But the Z5 is i nightmare. Mine broke while it was in my pocket when i was riding a car. My child Z5 broke while she was sleeping and my friends broke from i really ligth drop. They both got them from my recomendations on Sony phones never braking...

Poor quality. This was my last Sony.

Another one right here...

After I was charching my phone on the PC, I disconnected it and I got no response from the screen. I had no idea what it was until hours later I discoverd a crack!

Build up stress could be the only reason I can think of.

It got hot several times over the last couple of weeks (playing while charging)... Anyway, didn't happen with my previous phones.

I'm curious what the result will be; warranty? repair? how expensive?

Actually I think you'll find they can... There have been many cases of phone screens cracking from overheating. In most cases it would be impacted by environmental settings such as being left near a heater or inside a car etc but it does happen.
