Xperia Ray - No network ...

I have a problem with my new Xperia Ray.

I've got it from a friend since he has bought an iPhone insted.

The phone used to work perfectly when he had it, but with my SIM-card in it, there is no network.

I get a message saying something similar to "Network not supported by your SIM-card".

What does this mean... ?

Is it SIM-locked, or does it need to be repaired or something like that?

Your device is SIM-locked? If it is, it's normal. You have to unlock it.

Yes I know that it's not unusual that a phone needs to be unlocked.

But what I'm asking is how to know for sure.
The phone must have accepted my SIM-card in some way, since I can see all my contacs.

And therefore I'm thinking it can't be SIM-locked? Otherwise I guess it would ask for some kind of code, during startup, or at least complain about the SIM...

Some say that this is an error within some of these phones, other says that it's just locked.

I would just like to know how to see the difference... Is it locked or is it an error(broken hard-/software)

Try to pick sim-card from other network,or you can always try to repair.

Tip : You can add this code to your contacts list, once you have added it, if you tap on it, it wont work, please do a long press, and then an edit number before call, this will then take you to the Service Menu, remember to add the *#*#*#*# as they are shown,, one mistake, and it wont work.

This was exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.
I've been asking the same question soooo many places now, but none came even close to answer my question. So thank you very much. Both to you and "Chardeen".

But the really weird thing is, that the result is either "0" or other numbers. Insted "?" appears..

It looks like this:

]

[? Network subset

]

[? Service provider

]

[? Corporate

]

[? SIM

]

Any idea if that means that it's locked ?

Try putting a sim in the phone, see if that changes anything, i'll ask my friend to see if he can help, you may find the following link, helpful!

Can you post exactly what is shown still unclear if a ? mark is shown, there should be a 0 or another number as described in the link SignedAdam provided. If there is a 0 next to the Network category it means its hard locked and cannot be changed.

What SIM card did your friend used and what SIM card are you using.

You could do the following backed up all your data, performed a factory reset and then deleted your APN settings and restored the defaults and made sure your signal was set at GSM/WCDMA.

This IS exactly what is shown... I know it's not the typical result, but that's also why I'm so confused about it myself..
Also very weird that the signs are split like below:

]

[? Network subset

]

[? Service provider

]

[? Corporate

]

[? SIM

]

And Yes, they ARE all question marks (?).. No zero or any other kinds of numbers.. It's very weird..
And I've also peformed a factory reset.. First thing that came in mind..
But hasn't deleted my so called APN setting.. Not quite sure how to do that..?

Hi Mike Ransby

To reset your APN, click "MENU" on front of phone, click "settings" on the bottom right of the screen

click "Wireless and Networks" at the top of the screen, Click "Mobile Networks" at the bottom of the screen,

Click "Access Point Names" at the bottom of the screen.

Click on the APN ,Click "MENU" on the front of the phone and select "Delete APN" on the screen,

To input a new APN click "MENU" on front of phone, click "settings" on the bottom right of the screen

click "Wireless and Networks" at the top of the screen, Click "Mobile Networks" at the bottom of the screen,

Click "Access Point Names" at the bottom of the screen. Click "MENU" on the front of the phone and select "New APN" on the screen,

Enter details of network settings below and then click "MENU" on the front of phone and "Save"

You need to known the APN setting, follow the link below

Once again, thanks a lot for your time.

And I think you're right..! Is seems like the APN settings are the big problem in my case.

I've followed your instructions. First I tried to delete the APN setting, by choosing:
MENU --> SETTINGS --> WIRELESS AND NETWORK --> MOBILE NETWORK --> ACCESS POINT NAMES...

But when I choose Access Point Names, the screen is totally empty.. Nothing to choose..
Only thing visible is the clock in the right corner, and the title "APN's" in the left corner...

I've tried to click the title, but as I expected, that didn't have any effect... So only thing I could do, was go back..

Maybe that is a sign that the phone is broken somehow?

Once again thanks for all the time you've put in this. Really appreciate it.

strange.... is that menu completely empty. can you post some screen shots of this menu.

how to take screenshots(if u don't know)

if you're in GB hold power button n take a screenshot

if you're in ICS hold power button and volume down button together and take a screen shot

I've managed to take a screenshot now, but don't if it's still interesting, since I've found a solution for the missing choices in the APN settings.

It seemed there was an new update for Android, which actually solved that part..

Still can't find my network though

Hey Chardeen,

After updating Android on my phone, I'm finally allowed to type in the APN Settings..

I found the exact settings at my phone companys webpage though just to ensure it's the right one..

But unfortunately that didn't solve the problem. Still can't find my network, and when I try to connect to some of the other network, it still reply something like "This network is not supported by your SIM-card"

I've also tried testing the SIM-lock code once again, but the result is still the same, with the question marks (?) and no numbers...

This is really weird..

i wonder how your friend used that phone in the first place.

did you changed any setting after getting the phone?

do you use a sim card from same servise provider which your friend used before?

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems with the phone. Its really strange and I don't what to try next.

Try to repair the firmware by using either Sony update service or pc companion, just in case the firmware has become corrupted.

You will needs to reset your APN.

Finally make sure your signal was set to WCDMAprefered/GSM.

click "MENU" on front of phone, click "settings" on the bottom right of the screen

click "Wireless and Networks" at the top of the screen, Click "Mobile Networks" at the bottom of the screen,

click "Network Mode" and select WCDMAprefered/GSM.

Incidentally what SIM are you using and what SIM did your friend use. If its possible can you get a SIM from someone and try it just incase its your SIM.

Pavan_Hyuga.. I've been thinking the exact same thing..

But the day I recieved the phone, I could see some photos saved on the memory card, taken the exact same day.. That's kind of why I'm thinking that the phone must have been fine then..

Also why I doubt that the phone could even be broken at this point.

I was kind of hoping that any of you, could tell right away that the phone was either SIM-locked or Hardlocked.

But to answer your question I use a SIM-card from a different service provider, but still use the same network, called TDC with 3G.

And when I first found out that I couldn't connect to my network, I reset the phone to factory settings.

But same result.. Really anoying!

can you pls lend a sim card from someone, (from same service provider which ur friend was using in your phone) and check whether it's working
