KD65AG9-Recording To Hard Drive

MY KD65AG9 will not record to the external hard drive. I have:

* Western Digital drive as recommended

* Formatted the drive and registered it with the TV; details are then shown within the system.

* The TV sees the drive.

* It will not record at all;

** For TV programme from my TV box I get the message - 'recording is available only with digital broadcasts';

** From any / all of the pre-programmed embedded TV sources it just does not activate and no error message.

I’m not sure what you are trying to record, but recording is limited to what comes over a terrestrial aerial or a satellite dish.

Thanks roya. I don't recall seeing this limitation in any Sony documentation so, all in all, pretty limited facility to embed in this day and age when most people have set-top boxes connected via high-speed fibre and so on as in my case. Your follow up is appreciated.

It’s true it does not enumerate what you can’t do, but what it says you can do is:-

“Allows one-touch and timer recording of a digital broadcast onto an external USB HDD device.” (My emphasis).

But most limitations are to do with sources being HDCP protected, with the obligation of sink (target) devices like TVs to allow copy-protected material only to be shown onscreen, and never recorded.

And there is quite an overhead on switching HDCP on and off, so lots of devices don’t bother, which means the very few non-protected sources or devices that there are often don’t get differentiated anyway.

Even stuff you can record, you will likely find is copy-once, where you can’t copy from your recording, and probably can’t even wander off with the USB device it’s on, and play it somewhere else.

Only the very people the copy protection is designed to stop, the crims who want to make hundreds of copies for commercial gain, instead of us with our hankering for a little flexibility, have the motive and the means to drive a coach and horses through HDCP 😢

Roya. Thanks once again for your time and the very detailed reply. I thought that copyright protection would be the real reason behind it and I can well understand why but it grates every now and again. On the plus side I now have a good HDD that I can put to other use!
