Yesterday the Sony KD-55XG8505 had a firmware update, after which i have lost the red button function on BBC services

To my knowledge this is a software limitation.

If it wasn’t a software limitation before the update, how come it’s a software limitation after the update?

I believe that's due to the feature being removed when the BBC decided to change/terminate the service then went back on it with a software update in between those 2 events, which means that the feature may come back in another update.

There was another thread for this same issue, and someone suggested a fix. Might be worth a try @rickyxsara.
