VAIO FS485B Laptop Battery not recognised

Had to buy a new battery for my VAIO FS-485B laptop. Worked perfectly until I did an update and now it is no longer recognised and wants to go into Hibernate all the time. Can only work using Mains/AC power now.
Anyone else had this problem or know of a solution?

Various Windows XP Service Packs and current Windows updates.

Have you tried a system restore to a point before you installed the updates..?
